Endodontics:
Root canal is a treatment option for issues such as non-vital teeth and fractured teeth with pulp exposure. It is less traumatic and less invasive than extraction and most commonly used for canine, maxillary 4th premolar and mandibular 1st molar teeth in dogs, and canine teeth in cats.
Extraction of a canine tooth is like losing a finger or thumb to us- the dog or cat must adapt to its loss. Root canal keeps this key tooth.
Mandibular canine teeth have such large roots the mesial mandible can become un-stabilize or at risk of fracture especially during extraction. Root canal on a canine tooth can be the best option.
Crown Reduction
Most commonly indicated in lower canine teeth due to base-narrow canines or due to short lower jaw (class II malocclusion) when the mandibular canine teeth intrude into the hard palate. In immature teeth too young for root canal treatment the pulp is capped with a restorative allowing the tooth to continue to live and mature normally.
