Mobile Service
Dr. Wurdell’s service is mobile to work at practices throughout Ontario especially Central Ontario but other locales will be considered.
Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA)
TTA is recommended for extra-cap for young and energetic dogs, as well as large and giant breed dogs of any size. This procedure does not directly impact the joint and no entry to the joint capsule is made.
I encourage clients to proceed to ACL surgery early in the course of ACL disease, ideally as soon as radiographic evidence of ACL disease is found. Partial tears produce persistent lameness, and always progress. Early surgery produces quicker return to complete function, mimimizes progression of osteoarthritis and protects the menisci from being damaged by an unstable joint.
Extracapsular Repair (X-cap)
I recommend the x-cap for all cats as well as smaller dogs under 40 lbs.
Meniscal Injury
The menisci need to be part of the discussion in the face of complete ACL tear in dogs because an occult meniscal injury not identified will produce disappointing results after surgery.
If there is an abnormal drawer sign, because occult meniscal injury is common, arthrotomy needs to be included in the surgical plan. The menisci are inspected and probed on all surfaces under joint distraction as well as magnification and illumination of the joint space. Tears or other damaged areas are removed. Remnants of the ACL will be removed if present.
Dentistry
